Baby cousin The meaning of the artist’s social change project is to show the flaws of abortion, with the image is showing the baby to convince the people to see what they would be missing and sway them to be against abortion. Something that I like about this photo is the type of font I used on the image, since it gives of the feeling of a child with the flowers in the letters. I like the use of the rule of thirds that I used in it to make sure the baby was the center of attention. Both of the of the words and the image convey the sense of loss of a child from a mistake that a person made. I would change the color of the letters to make it more visible and easier to read. The other that I would change is making the baby stand out more by having color in the face or making the image brighter so it seems happier. The way I could improve this image is making sure the words don’t blend into the picture as much and making sure the words have more power behind them.
Molly Parker Action Critique
Describe: The media used in this photo was cars and the outdoors. The artists used color from the background to close in the white car. Analyze: Movement is shown in this picture to make the background blurred. Interpret: The artist is showing the movement of the car by blurring the background. The personal voice is shown in color used to depict in the photo. Evaluation: It is successful because it is completing the intention of the photo. I would have made sure the car is as in focus as possible.
Kristen Kadrlik Action Critique
Describe: The media used in this photo is a plastic dish and water. The artist used color in the background to center the focus on the water. Analyze: Movement is used in the photo shown by the water. Interpret: The artist is showing the movement of the water. The personal voice is shown with the background which could also show the feeling of the image. Evaluation: It is successful because it is showing the intention of stop action. I would have made sure the water was as in focus as possible.
Calvin Kasper Action Critique
Describe: The media used in this photo is a shopping cart and the background is the shelves that are stocked with multicolored food. He used leading lines and color Analyze: Variety is used in this image with the different colored objects. Interpret: I think the artist is trying to convey how fast the cart is going and maybe showing how fast the feeling maybe. There is definitely a personal voice in the way the artist cropped the photo. The intention of the artist is to show how fast the cart is going. Evaluation: Yes it is successful because it is showing the intention of the picture which is motion blur. I would have made the shopping cart more clear.
Portrait Self Critique
Describe: Clairice’s art the names of the art are mood and side lit explaining what kind of portrait it is and it was put on her website on February 11th, 2019. The pictures are of people close up in black and white. Behind the people it seems to have a blank wall and some sort of light is on them or facing them making it easier to get a side lit photo. They are both dark on the left and progressively become brighter to the right of the picture. There is a lot of detail in the photo form what the subjects are wearing and shape is shown in the girl’s cardigan and the older man’s v neck shirt. Value is shown very prominently in the photo as I said above. The color is in black in white which brings out some aspects that you would not have been able to see if it was in color and not in black and white. Analyze: Unity is achieved with how close the subject is in both photos. Variety is achieved in the girl photo by having the patterned cardigan and the plain shirt under it. The peoples hair in both photos add texture to the images. The emphasis is brought to the faces by not being in color because that would have distracted the person looking at the photo. Interpret: The mood in the side-lit photo is more mysterious or that she has a look of longing. She also looks like she is thinking about something and has to make a decision. The personal voice I think is shown in both how they are both giving a mood and how they are in black and white showing another dimension to the photos. In the second photo the mood is more joyous and like something good is happening. He also looks like he is enjoying himself maybe laughing at a joke. I think the overall intention of the artist was to really close in on the mood of the model in the photo and depict it in black and white to give it character. Evaluation: The photos were definitely successful in showing mood and closing in on that subject so that you weren’t distracted by the other aspects of the picture, but those aspects were still there but subtle. I think to do it better she could have cropped the pictures just a little bit more to fully focus on the faces of the posers in the images.
Artist Paper
Clairice Kowalke Mr. Monett Photography one 3/6/19 Elliot Erwitt Elliott Erwitt was a well known photographer and filmmaker of his time. He was born in Paris, France on July 26th, 1928. He was known for his random and weird photographs of everyday settings. He studied at Los Angeles City College and the New School for Social Research. A year later after he went to college he was drafted into the arm for two years. During his time in the army he worked as a photographers assistant. His photo included dogs and so did five of the books he wrote. For his art he was awarded many awards including the Royal photographic society’s Centenary Award, the Honorary Fellowship award in 2002, and the international center for photography’s Infinity Award. Although, he did a lot of work with books he put most of is time and effort into the movies working on many things but most famous is Glassmakers of Herat, Afghanistan in 1977. His style is mostly known for his black and white photos of absurd and crazy situations in everyday settings. He was very successful for his documentation of the barracks in France and his pictures of famous people with dogs. I chose this artist because his pictures really stood out to me with the dogs in the pictures. It seemed that he edited his photos to make them funny but they were still serious because they were in black and white. His documentation on the war was very important for people at home to know what it was really like to be in the barracks. He edited photos in a way that made people take a double take when they looked at his photos and figure out what really was going on in the photo. You had to study the photo not just glance at it.
Social Change Paper
Clairice Kowalke Mr. Monett Photography one 3/6/19 Life The biggest question in our society today is if it is right to kill an unborn child that can’t choose for itself if it wants to live. It is only if the mother chooses to keep it or not. This is not a choice that a mother should be allowed to have. The fathers should also be included in the decision because it is their child too and you wouldn’t have gotten pregnant if it wasn’t for them, so keep that in mind. As you have probably already guessed I am pro-life and I am hoping by reading this essay you will become more educated on the topic and maybe swayed in your opinion on abortion. There are many reasons that people get abortions and many as to why they don’t. The biggest reason why people get an abortion is because they don’t want another child, it would affect their education or interfere with their job (illinoisrighttolife). Some people say that what if they are raped then it is okay to have an abortion, but you can’t say that because only one percent gave the reason that they were raped and that’s why they got an abortion (illinoisrighttolife). This is just one statistic that shows how you can not justify abortion with saying well what if someone was raped. Many people try to justify killing a baby in the womb, but have you ever thought about that a baby’s heart is already beating by week three (mayoclinic). How come life is presumed dead when your heart stops beating, but not when it starts to beat. Most women don’t know they are pregnant till they are five weeks into their pregnancy, so that means the baby’s heart has already started to beat (americanpregnancy). Are you willing to kill someone that already has a heartbeat, isn't that murder? After an abortion many women may feel regret for what they have done and rightly so, they have just killed a living human being. The same person that could have changed their life in a tremendous, but wonderful way. Abortion has many side effects it could ultimately cause death or you could bleed out (americanpregnancy). It can also cause you to lose babies in the future that you might actually want to have. I don’t know about you, but I would never risk my life to get rid of someone else’s life. Life is a gift and everyone should be allowed to live it. No matter who they are or what life they are being brought into. Everyone deserves to live and get the chance to live. I for one am pro life and will continue to be. Are you? Did this paper change your opinion on the topic? Just remember the choice is yours to make you are the one who has to live with what you chose for the rest of your life. I hope this paper has changed your outlook on abortion, but if it hasn’t then do some research on your own and see the dangers of abortion. See what is behind the curtain.

Photo I American Photography: A century of Images ________________________________________________________________________
What reasons does the documentary suggest are the reasons for taking and keeping photographs?
They kept the photos because they show a record of what he is proud of and shows that he was actually there. They help us see what the world was like in the past. They make people want to help certain causes.
List three reasons why people sent postcards in the early 1900s.
1. They sent them to show what they were doing to make it real 2. Used by newspapers because they couldn’t afford to take their own photos and helped show the strikes or big stuff in the country that was happening. 3. Used to show big events to send to grandma
Compare Edward Curtis’s work with Frank Matsura’s work. Why do you think Edward Curtis’s work is more famous?
He was a great photographer because he took photos of people that he thought was going to disappear. He brought to the Native Americans how they could have been and how they could have. He showed fake lives of the Native Americans. Frank took pictures of reality and how stuff actually was. Curtis was more popular because people want to see fantasy they live reality and that’s probably what they think it actually was.
What was straight photography, who invented it and how did he make it art and not a snapshot?
They looked like rich prints and drawings. They were set apart by the different ways they took the photos or manipulated it. It was a hands on job and that is what made it art. Alfred Stieglitz was the one who invented it. The art depended on the photographer’s point of view. Strand invented it when he cropped out certain parts of a photo to make one object the sole focus.
How was photography used by the U.S. government in WWI? What was censored and why?
The US government used it to start a propaganda to help get Americans to support the war and get images were posed or away from the battlefield. They couldn’t show pictures of dead soldiers. They weren’t allowed to be on the front lines. The government only tried to get Americans to support the war and didn’t show the actual horrors of war just a mask over what was really happen.
How did the wire photograph affect daily news?
It was affected because it sold itself with just photos. Pictures were used to attract attention and have people buy their newspaper. People just bought it because of the photos that were used. They can send pictures through wire or satellite. It made it easier for newspapers to get news from around the country even the world. Everyone could have the same photo on their front page on the same day all the way around the country. News was never the dame it was only sold with pictures and if it didn’t it wouldn’t have been successful.
Why did most people think Ansel Adams photography was irrelevant at the time he was making photographs?
Part of a government agency that took photos to show America to Americans. He photographed mountains and taking pictures of nature. People thought it was irreverent during the world war like that didn’t matter during this time period. He was later when people started to figure out that they needed to take care of the earth and what it gave to us.
Why was WWII called a photographers dream?
There was so much to take pictures of and so many news stories to cover because of all the different places it was fighting. It was easy to show what they were fighting against. Even in America the Japanese were being discriminated. There was a ton of discrimination of the japs because of their skin but the Germans were at discriminated because they were white. The photographs could show what was happening and sway people’s opinion in a certain way.
How did photography help the civil rights movement in the 1960s?
It shows what it was really like for black people in American at the time. It showed the horrors of black discrimination. It did a good job of showing police brutality against the blacks. The pictures helped people see how they needed to change and how bad it had really become.
How did the photography of the Vietnam War contribute to American opinion?
It showed how the government wanted the people to think about the war. They tried to sway people towards the war but some newspapers were against the war and trying to show people how this would affect America and how this wasn’t our fight. It showed the horrors of war and how bad it actually was. It changed how people thought about the war and showed how many were actually dying not just what the government wanted us to see. It made people believe what was actually happening, because they could see it with their own eyes.
What problems were listed because of the digital age in photography?
It manipulates what people believe about a certain instant of time or thing that is going on. You can change who is in the photo and what they look like. They can manipulate you can make someone completely different and change the color and manipulate it to make a person feel a different way about the photo. They might get rid of important photos because they don’t have enough room for them.
What is a benefit digital manipulation?
It helps find missing children and can show how a person may have aged so it is easier to see what the person would look like now. It would be easier to find someone when you can see what they look like now.
What problems could the lack of film present for us in the future?
Thins could all be fake and not truly authentic. People wouldn’t be able to look at the past and how bad it was it keeps everyone one together showing the world how it was in the past. We see pictures as a normal occurrence, but if that was taken away you wouldn’t be able to see the history of the world.
Chapter 6 1.Camera motion blur, Subject motion blur, Out of focus blur , Depth of field blur
2. The faster the shutter speed the more the photo will capture a single movement
3. The picture we chose is Track they used panning to get a successful photo of the runners. Another choice they could have used is a higher flash to make the photo less blurry. Another photo we chose is Bullet Piercing an Apple they used a fast flash to clearly show the apple getting hit by the bullet, and they used a background that doesn’t distract from the apple as well. They could have used a faster shutter speed to show every little piece of the apple explosion.
4. You can see the power of the bullet and how it pushes out the liquid of the apple, in a spread out motion. You can see how the apple breaks into parts because of the power of the bullet. You can see the movement of the liquid because of how it spread out.
